salt of the earth leadership

leading in a world of uncertainty & change

Salt of the Earth

As leaders, of all capacities, it is important to identify the lens that we see the world through so that we are consistent in the decisions, answers, and predispositions that we have. Others will have more comfort with us, when they know what to expect from us.

As a leader, have you identified your “lens” of leadership. With all of the research, articles, books, and the general minefield of data that exists surrounding leadership - one may think that identifying their lens, or “style” of leadership would be easy, just go with what the literature says! But what does all of the literature say?

I contend that it says too much. In fact, I have stopped reading “leadership” material and I have focused on learning more deeply about substance - content - things that directly matter & affect the classroom - and it has made all of the difference for my perspectives.

I have framed my leadership style in what I refer to as “Salt of the Earth Leadership.” This frame comes from the primary thought that salt is only as useful as its level of saltiness or flavor, and when it has lost its flavor, then that salt becomes irrelevant. Stay salty - stay relevant!

Things to Consider on the Salt Flat:

*What hill would you die on as a leader? What are your non-negotiables?
*What are your Core Beliefs for education? What do you believe about kids?
*Where do you get fed and by whom / what?
*Are you relevant?
*What is your spin?  Where do you belong?

Ask the Right Questions:

How = Understanding that improvement is always possible,
Might = The optimism that there is a solution,
We = The understanding that we are in this together.

This is the Premise:

1. Lead with your ear.
2. Attitude and Action are all that really exist.
3. Strength, power & authority should be used for the sake of serving others.
4. Give grace & hope to others.

This is the Mantra:

*Be Quiet,
*Be Calm,
*Be Humble,
*Be Pure.

This is the Reminder:

*Remember who you are - and how you became that.
*Remember the "why" of what you stand for - not the what.
